ENVISION: INCLUSIVE CONSERVATION IN PROTECTED AREA MANAGEMENT

ENVISION: Inclusive conservation in protected area management: Projects

ENVISION is a 3-year project funded through the 2017-2018 Belmont Forum and BiodiveERsA joint call under the BiodivScen ERA-Net COFUND programme. The ENVISION project will result in the development of several communications and policy tools to identify, compare and balance the multiple visions for any given area. ENVISION will also enhance understanding about social and ecological consequences of protected area management with an aim to facilitate reflection on future growth and landscape change.

This research explores how protected area management can be more inclusive in the context of the US and EU. Specifically, our team is sharing lessons learned in communities surrounding four protected areas: Kemmer Rijn reserve (Netherlands), Sierra de Guadarrama National Park (Spain), the Västra Harg nature reserve (Sweden), and Denali National Park and Preserve (US). Each study sites represent a diversity of ecological contexts such as marshes, a peri-urban mountain landscape, and agricultural-dominated oak forest. The potential for comparison across communities can also foster discussions about how protected area management agencies can better represent community interests across a diversity of land use contexts.
