PSYCHOLOGICAL DRIVERS OF PREFERENCES FOR THE CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION

Psychological drivers of preferences for the climate change adaptation: Projects

Protected area resources and their adjacent communities have been experiencing unprecedented and rapid change, especially at higher latitudes like Interior Alaska. Global environmental change challenges traditional protected area management paradigms and necessitates the use of innovative strategies for adapting to impacts. In the region surrounding Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, altered weather patterns, hydrology, and vegetation have become primary drivers of change that are manifesting impacts being observed and experienced by residents. Decisions about the future of this landscape involve tradeoffs that underscore the significance of including diverse stakeholder perspectives. My thesis research extends previous aims to provide empirical evidence of residents’ preferences for adapting to climate change using a discrete choice model to quantify tradeoffs that residents of Interior Alaska are willing to make in the face of change. While research utilizing choice experiments is growing in natural resources and environmental management contexts, few studies have explore the relationships between psychological processes and utility. This research explores how specific environmental attitudes influence individual preferences for future landscape change in Denali, Alaska.

Inclusive conservation in Denali, Alaska

This research is part of a larger project funded by the National Science Foundation and the National Park Service focused on understanding the values of local communities and connections that form between people and places in the region surrounding Denali National Park and Preserve. Our specific aim is to establish a process for ‘inclusive conservation’ that incorporates multiple viewpoints into decision-making about resource management.
